On Hiring, Inspiring
(from Newsweek April 4, 2005)

Hiring good people is hard. Hiring great people is brutally hard. Yet nothing matters more in winning than getting the right people on the field, then guiding them on the right way to succeed and get ahead.

Three tests before you hire:
  1. Integrity; people with integrity tell the truth and they keep their word.
  2. Intelligence; strong dose of intellectual curiosity with breadth knowledge to work with or lead intelligent people in today’s complex world.
  3. Maturity; handle stress and setbacks, and enjoy success with equal parts of joy and humility.
4E & 1P
1E = Do they display Positive Energy
2E = Do they Energize others
3E = Edge – do they have the courage to make tough yes and no decisions?
4E= Execute – The ability to get the job done, make things happen?
1P= Passion, a heartfelt, deep and authentic excitement about work

Make sure every candidate interviewed is interviewed by several people

The most important question in the interview process; why did you leave your last two previous employers?
